run.pay exists because I got frustrated. Here's what happened — and why I think this is the most important infrastructure layer for the autonomous agent economy.
I was building AI agents — LangChain pipelines, CrewAI crews, AutoGen workflows. Every time my agent needed to call a specialized service — hallucination detection, PII scanning, compliance checking — I hit the same wall:
Sign up. Verify email. Enter billing. Get an API key. Store it securely. Rotate it every 90 days. Repeat for every service.
My "autonomous" agent was running on a scaffolding of human setup work. It wasn't autonomous at all. It was dependent on me remembering to renew subscriptions and manage 15 different dashboards.
"What if an agent could just... pay for what it needs, autonomously, like it calls any other HTTP endpoint?"
The agent economy is real and it's happening fast. LangChain has millions of developers. CrewAI and AutoGen are growing exponentially. OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google are all betting on agents as the next computing paradigm.
But none of the payment infrastructure exists for machines. Every API marketplace — RapidAPI, AWS Marketplace, Apigee — was built for humans who sign up and manage accounts. They're fundamentally incompatible with autonomous agents.
run.pay fills this gap. One wallet. 205 services. One line of code. Stripe handles the billing. The agent stays autonomous.
We're also betting on x402 — an emerging HTTP payment standard that lets servers say "this costs $0.01" and clients pay inline in the same request. It's the natural evolution of how agents will discover and pay for services.
run.pay is the first marketplace to implement x402 natively with Stripe — no crypto, no blockchain, just HTTP and Stripe. We think this will be the default payment primitive for the agent economy within 2-3 years.
run.pay is currently a solo project. I'm building it because I believe the autonomous agent economy needs this infrastructure layer — and nobody else was building it the right way.
